Montgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected Reserves

Montgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected ReservesMontgomery GI Bill for Members of Selected ReservesThe good news is, unlike the Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill (ADMGIB), to participate in the Selective Reserves Montgomery G.I. Bill (SRMGIB), one does elend have their pay reduced by $100 per month for the first 12 months of service. Also, one can begin using benefits immediately after IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training), which normally means right after completing basic training and military job training school. The bad news is that the SRMGIB pays much, much less in education benefits. The SRMGIB pays a total of $11,844 worth of education benefits, compared to total benefits of more than $47,000 for the active duty program. Like the ADMGIB, the SRMGIB is not managed by the individual services. The program is managed by the Veterans Administration (VA), under laws enacted by Congress. The program is for members of the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps , and Coast Guard, and the Air and Army National Guard. Selected Reserves means those individuals who are triole a nadir of one weekend per month, and two weeks per year (so, it doesnt include the inactive reserves, who dont drill). Eligibility You are eligible for the SRMGIB if you meet the following requirements Six-year selected reserve obligation You must have a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve. If youre an officer, you must agree to serve six years in addition to your current obligation.Complete your IADT (Initial Active Duty for Training) In most cases, this means basic training and military job training school.Maintain selected reserve position Serve in a drilling Selected Reserve unit and remain in good standing.Completed high school You must have obtained a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before you apply for benefits. Completing 12 hours toward a college degree before you apply for benefits also meets this requirement. Restriction s ROTC scholarship You cant be eligible for SRMGIB if youre receiving financial assistance through the Senior ROTC program. Interestingly, however, while federal law prohibits ADMGIB benefits for those who receive a commission through a service academy, there are no such restrictions under the law for the SRMGIB.AGR status If you enter Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) status, your eligibility for MGIB SR will be suspended. You may be eligible for MGIB AD. You may resume MGIB SR eligibility after your AGR status ends. Federal active duty Under some active duty enlistment programs, part of the leistungspunkt for obtaining the ADMGIB is based on continuing service (after active duty) in the Selected Reserves. If your active duty enlistment falls under one of these programs, you arent eligible for the SRMGIB. Your Reserve or Guard component makes decisions about your eligibility. VA doesnt have authority under the law to make or reverse eligibility determinations. If your eligibility status is corrected, VA will pay benefits for periods when you were eligible. Expiration of Benefits The SRMGIB used to expire 14 years after one became eligible, or upon disdienstgrad from the Selected Reserves, whichever occurred first. However, this has been changed by the FY 2008 Defense Authorization Act. MGIB benefits now expire 10 years after honorable discharge from the Selected Reserves. Note Congress has made significant enhancements to the GI Bill for military members (active duty, Guard, and Reserves) with post-9/11 active duty service. Rates The VA uses the term entitlement to mean the number of months of benefits you may receive. Under the ADMGIB, one is entitled to 36 months worth of full-time benefits. Therefore, to find the maximum entitlement, one takes the maximum monthly payment and multiplies it by 36. Full-time student $329.00 per month3/4-time student $246.00 per monthHalf-time student $163.00Less than 1/2 time $82.25 The above rates would be paid unti l your entire entitlement ($11,844) is used. In other words, full-time students would receive 329.00 per month for up to 36 months, 1/2-time students would receive $246.00 per month for up to 72 months, etc. Full time generally means taking at least 12 credit hours in a term or 24 clock hours per week. 3/4 time generally means taking at least 9 credit hours in a term or 18 clock hours per week. Half time generally means taking at least 6 credit hours in a term or 12 clock hours per week. For approved programs in college and vocational or technical schools, basic payments are monthly and the rates are based on your training time. For on-the-job training (OJT) andapprenticeship programs, rates are monthly and based on your length of time in the program. Your MGIB rates decrease as your wages increase according to an approved wage schedule. For correspondence courses, you receive 55 percent of the approved charges for the course. For flight training, you receive 60 percent of the appro ved charges for the course. The basic monthly rates increase October 1 every year with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase. They may increase at other times by an act of Congress. Increases Above the Rates If youre in a critical unit or have a critical job skill, you may be entitled to an additional amount, commonly known as a kicker. The kicker, is an additional amount of money that increases your basic MGIB monthly benefit and is included in your VA payment. Example. Lets say you have the SRMGIB and a kicker of $5,000. Your total education entitlements are the SRMGIB ($11,844), plus the kicker ($5,000), or $16,844 total. Divide that number by 36 and you get $467.88 worth of full-time education benefits, per month, for 36 months. This is how much you would receive if you attended school full time while in the Selected Reserves. Converting to the Active Duty G.I. Bill If you were activated under Title 10 U. S. Code and have served on active duty continuously for 24 month s, you may now be able to qualify for ADMGIB benefits. You may do outreach work under the supervision of a VA employee, prepare and process VA paperwork, work at a VA medical facility, or other approved activities. You must train at the three-quarter or full-time rate. The maximum number of hours you may work is 25 times the number of weeks in your enrollment period. Payments will be at the Federal or Stateminimum wage, whichever is greater. Changing Programs You can receive benefits for one change of program without VA approval for the change if your attendance, conduct, and progress in the last program were sa tisfactory. The VA may approve additional changes if the proposed programs are suitable for your abilities, aptitudes, and interests. The VA wont charge a change of program when you enroll in a new program if you successfully completed your last program. Satisfactory Progress Once you start receiving benefits, you must maintain satisfactory attendance, conduct, and progress. If you dont meet your schools standards, the certifying official must, by law, notify the VA. The VA, by law, must stop your benefits if the school reports unsatisfactory attendance, conduct, or progress. The VA may resume benefits if you reenter the same program at the same school, and your school approves your reentry and certifies it to VA. If you dont re-enter the same program at the same school, they may resume benefits if the cause of your unsatisfactory attendance, conduct, or progress has been removed. The VA also must find that the program you intend to take is suitable to your abilities, aptitudes, and interests. Submitting an Application for Benefits You can get and submit the application (VA Form 22-1990) in several ways You can complete and submit the application online. Just go towww.gibill.va.govand click on Electronic Application Form. You can also print out the form from the above site and mail it to the VA regional office that processes your claim.Call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) and request the form. (Unfortunately, you may have difficulty getting through quickly at the toll-free number, especially when school enrollments are heavy. You may have more success by going to the Internet site). You may also be able to pick up the application from the school or training facility youre attending. Most schools have counselors that will help you complete the application form. Applying for Benefits If youve decided on the program you want to take, follow these steps to apply for benefits First, check in with the school or training facility official who certifies enro llments for VA benefits. At a school, this official may be in one of the following offices Financial Aid, Veterans Affairs, Registrar, Admissions, Counseling, or other offices. For OJT or an apprenticeship, the official may be in the Training, Finance, Personnel, or other offices. Note The certifying official isnt a VA employee. The official can tell you whether the program you want to take is approved for VA benefits. If the program is approved, the official must submit your enrollment information to the VA. Second, complete the application package for VA benefits and send it to the appropriate VA regional office. Note The certifying official may help you with this step. Many facilities will send the application package for you, including your application and certification of your enrollment. Its a good idea because you may avoid delay in getting your benefits started if VA receives everything needed at the same time. The package consists of Your completed VA Form 22-1990, Applicat ion for VA Education Benefits. If youre on active duty, you must have your base Education Service Officer certify your application by signing in the appropriate block.Certification of your enrollment. The school or training official who certifies enrollments must send this information to VA. If you havent decided on the program you want to take, or simply want a determination of your eligibility for MGIB, just send the application (VA Form 22-1990). If youre eligible, youll receive a Certificate of Eligibility showing how long youre eligible and how many months of benefits you can receive.

Get out of the office for work. Its good for you.

Get out of the office for work. Its good for you.Get out of the office for work. Its good for you.Working from home is getting a bad rap.Yahoo banned it, as did IBM. Some researchers even suggest that working outside the office has ill effects on ones health.Ive worked from home for over 4 years. While Ive certainly felt sporadic pangs of loneliness, its never negatively impacted my work performance. In fact, I believe the social isolation has actually helped me be even more productive, and better able to understand the outside world than if I worked in an office. In fact, the flexibility to work from home is an enormous recruiting tool. Diebold executives have bragged about how hiring people outside of its Ohio headquarters helped improve its talent pool. And a whopping 67% of employers allowed people to work from home, according to a 2014 study from the Families and Work Institute. In fact, the workers who are happiest are the ones who work in the office only one day a week. The four -day workweek is getting more popular.Heres how working remotely can be good for employees, and why employers should encourage it (at least from time to time).Yes, working from home gets lonely. No, thats not a bad thing. If youve ever worked from home, you may think, wait a minute. Working from home is awesome I get stuff done in my pajamas and hang with my pets all day. How could it be bad for me?Let me explain. Working from home on a regular basis can get lonely without a social outlet.Recently, several studies concluded that loneliness has the potential to be as bad for us as smoking, drinking and eating our favorite fehlte nicht viel food three times a week. One study that was published in the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in January found lonely people are more likely to produce inflammatory compounds, which can in turn lead to heart disease and other chronic disorders.Apparently loneliness has the potential to negatively affect businesses as well. A recent stud y on the UK workforce called The Cost of Loneliness claims social isolation costs employers approximately $3.1 billion in productivity loss due to impacts on employee health and overall wellness.A productivity boost Fewer colleagues and no commuteImagine you didnt have that long commute to and from the office every morning, and you only had to look presentable from the waist up (for video calls). Suddenly it becomes very clear how remote workers could easily surpass office workers in terms of productivity. According to a 2015 Stanford University study in which they monitored a Chinese travel agencys employees for a year, the employees who worked from home had a 13% higher performance tarif than the office employees. They were also more productive per minute, which researchers believe was due to less external distractions, fewer breaks, and fewer sick days. Take that, Cost of Loneliness reportYoull end up getting a better nights sleepAnyone over 25 knows how important sleep is for st aying focused at work. A study that was published in the Sleep Health journal chronicled the sleeping habits of 500 workers, and found the ones with more flexible work schedules and atmospheres slept better overall. Having some control over where and how they work seems to make people feel more in control of their lives, which in turn results in sleeping more soundly.Working remotely means less job stress and less family stressSpeaking of control, working from home on the regular seems to increase employees perceived autonomy and decreases overall job stress. These beneficial effects seem to grow exponentially for high-intensity remote workers, aka people who work from home half the week or more. A 2007 meta-analysis of 46 individual studies exhibited this as well as a lower rate of work-family conflict. Some people are cut out for remote workHeres where that study at the top of this article comes back into play. Working from home has the potential to make your work (and home) life much better IF the setup suits you. Personally, I feel like I do better work from home, because there are less external distractions, and I feel free from office bureaucracy, but Im a particular type of person. A 2014 University of Calgary study found there are other types of people whose productivity is stunted by the work-from-home atmosphere. These may also be the people who are more negatively affected by the loneliness factor, which could in turn lead to the health problems stated above. If youre someone who thrives off of constant face-to-face interaction, youre probably not meant to be a remote worker.Employers should, however, extend the work-from-home option to everyone.Considering all the benefits above, employers would be wise to offer all their employees a remote work option. By giving some work-life control back to their employees, theyll be getting the most out of the ones who thrive in such an environment. At the same time, all their employees will feel less stressed about needing to stay home with a sick kid, or waiting 8 hours for the plumber to show up, because they can still clock in. Life doesnt usually work around a traditional work schedule, but, thanks to technology, most jobs can work around life.

These are the specific conversations you need to have with your boss every month of the year

These are the specific conversations you need to have with yur boss every month of the yearThese are the specific conversations you need to have with your boss every month of the yearWhen you think about those monthly check-ins with your boss, its the standing invite on your calendar that likely brews both excitement and anxiety. Even so, being in constant communication with the person who will help you meet your professional goals should always be a priority. One way to take the heat off of these 30-day mind melds is to come in with a plan, according to motivational speaker and workplace expert Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D.Some employees wait for feedback or direction from the manager, and assume that no news is good news. But in fact, that is notlage always so, she said. To be safe, it is best to have consistent, regular dialogue to ensure that needs are being met in both directions. Here, then, is some month-by-month fodder that will build trust, rapport, and loyalty with your bossJanuary The one about focusEspecially if youre on the East Coast, coming back to work after a long winters cat nap over the holidays is a drag. Not only is it usually freezing outside, but fewer hours of daytime mean you barely catch a glimpse of the sun. Hakim says many employees struggle during this season, so its extra important to get clear with your manager about the goals of the quarter so you can stay focused and perform at your highest level, even if youd ratzu sich stay at home instead. It is easy to get overwhelmed by work, so knowing what to prioritize will help you to focus your energy where it counts. And, without asking, you may be spinning your wheels on a project that really should be placed on the back burner, Hakim says.February The one about prioritizing.Since some folks dont consider Valentines Day a holiday worth celebrating, February often feels like the official end to the holiday season, where everyone is back in office and ready to tackle deadlines and deliverables. If you find yourself in the middle of three (or mora) tasks all at once, all of a sudden, getting clear about what needs to be completed first and foremost will give your boss the best impression. Hakim also notes itll demonstrate your commitment. Asking about what needs to be accomplished shows that you care about your managers goals and priorities. The managers response may help you to better prioritize many new and ongoing projects, she says.March The one about promotions and raisesThe hard, cold truth about being a professional? If you dont stand up for your career, no one will - and its up to you to have the conversation about meeting your career objectives. In other words Hakim says if youre aiming for a raise or a promotion, you and your manager need to be on the same page about what you need to achieve, change or mold to get there.March makes for the ideal time to start this chat. Expressing your professional goal and asking for resources or steps to achieve it, shows your boss that you are committed to self-growth and overall goal attainment, Hakim says. Managers appreciate this drive and long for employees who are self-motivated and determined.April The one about the second quarterAfter nailing it during the first quarter, going above and beyond what was requested of you, keep the momentum going in April by getting specific about how to be even better at your job. Hakim suggests asking your boss about his or her goals for the second quarter and volunteering to take on extra work to make them possible. We want to be seen as a go-getter and thought of for special projects that will get the most attention by the higher-ups, she says. By showing an interest in these projects, your boss will likely think of you for help. This can benefit you as you progress in the organization.May The one where you surprise themWhile, sure, you dont want to be seen as someone who is bending over backward and brown nosing your way to a fancier title, taking note of your m anagers interests will help you build a professional friendship. Being buddy-buddy isnt recommended, but if your boss sees you as someone who pays attention, listens, and remembers qualities and tastes, youre more likely to earn their respect.Hakim says to seek out an article you think theyd appreciate it and bring it up in the context of an 11. This shows the boss that you have her best interests at heart. When your boss feels that you are thinking of her and of her goals, then she in turn will keep you top-of-mind, she says.June The one about vacationAnd no, not the PTO you want to snag before your co-worker does, but your managers summer plans. This topical conversations illustrates the emphasis you put on work/life balance and that you understand your manager needs time with friends and family, too. Its also a way to reassure your boss that when they are jet-setting to Europe or a trendy island, you have their back. While it is ideal to keep dialogue solely about work-related top ics, it is also important to show your boss that you care. This personal discussion reminds your boss that you see him as a human being and not just as your manager, Hakim says.July The one where you show your commitmentThat summer breeze might make you feel fine, but if you let it sweep you away from your deadlines, your manager might be less than peachy-keen with you. Instead of allowing the temptation of warm weather distract you from working at your highest level, double-down and communicate your commitment to your next-up. With half a year behind you, get nitty-gritty with new goals for the third quarter. In addition to putting you in the limelight with your micro-attention to detail, Hakim also says itll save you unnecessary busy work in case your priorities are not aligned with those of your boss.August The one where you ask for adviceNow that youve maintained consistent, constant, meaningful talks throughout the year, its time to seek the expertise of your manager. Since the yve likely been in the game longer than you have, seeking their perspective on books or blogs to read, courses to take, or other advancement advice illustrates respect.Bosses love to feel important, and it is a huge compliment for them if you want to emulate their behavior. This question isnt sucking up either, since you can truly benefit from the insights of someone who is a leader in your organization or industry, Hakim says.September The one where you ask for feedbackA great sign of maturity is being able to ask for critical feedback - and actually take it without getting offended. Roll up your sleeves, straighten your back, take a deep breath, and go for it in September.Bosses respect individuals who strive for self-improvement and growth. They especially appreciate those who can take constructive criticism and run with it, Hakim says. One way to open this can is to ask for areas of improvement or express places you personally seek to strengthen, giving your manager leeway to de scribe their experience working with you, too.October The one where you show your listening skillsRemember when you inquired about areas of weakness last month? Now is the time to make your monthly meet-up about all of the ways you began working to strengthen those skills or characteristics. Its one thing to ask for advice and another thing to take it and apply it. Bosses love employees who do just that, Hakim says. If you can dictate with tangible numbers? Even betterNovember The one where you wrap up the yearSince - ahem, thankfully - Thanksgiving falls at the end of the month, the first three weeks of November can be spent getting serious about what needs to be finished by end of year, and setting up timelines to ensure success. The months leading up to the holiday season are notoriously slow, even when deliverables are still open and incomplete. By asking this question, your boss understands that you are still focused on work and on meeting department and company objectives, Hak im says.December The one where you express gratitudeAs a month that sneaks up on nearly all professionals and then flies by far too fast with endless holiday parties, travel, and responsibility, pausing to say thanks to your manager will go a long way, and earn you major bonus stars.Gratitude is infectious When we show that we are grateful and appreciative, then our boss will likely respond in kind. This positivity can make it easier to plow through those final days of the year as we wait for holiday and vacation time, Hakim says.

Procurement Opportunities in a Down Market

Procurement Opportunities in a Down MarketProcurement Opportunities in a Down MarketThe job search for one director of IT procurement leads to a new job in law as the director of international procurement. To switch from working in technology and manufacturing to legal services takes courage and imagination, qualities Christin Burek has in spades.Burek, who had worked for both IBM and Honeywell in Phoenix, began searching for a new position when herbei spouse took a job in Illinois and the couple decided to relocate to Chicago. While location welches key, Burek was open-minded about where she could apply her experience in global procurement and supply-chain management. She did notlage actively start exploring her job options on Ladders until the decision to relocate was definite. That was in July 2008. The search was fast, and it was effective, she recalled. In fact, I had two offers to consider in October, which was surprising in this environment. And the other one also came off Ladde rs.The offer that intrigued Burek the most came from Mayer Brown, an international law firm operating in most major cities worldwide. Mayer Brown had just created the position of director of global procurement, and the company was willing to fill it in London, New York or Chicago.New twists on procurementFor Burek whose background is strictly procurement supply chain, not law the role presented a couple of enticing challenges.Mayer Brown had shifted its focus, Burek said, from operating as a law partnership within a small structure to running the firm like a fully fledged geschftsleben operation. That presented a significant amount of challenge, she said. Something that from a career standpoint I had not yet had the opportunity to do. It was almost a green field because procurement wasnt necessarily a formal function within Mayer Brown prior to my arrival. As director of global procurement, Burek is responsible for organizing and implementing contracting and procurement strategies and increasing international operational efficiency and profitability. This includes all business categories from services to travel, offices to facilities, real estate to IT. And within the overall operational plan, the focus of the role is to create a strategic policy of process for each category. For Burek, the primary challenge was adapting her approach from her previous operational experiences at IBM and Honeywell. From head of procurement for a technology operation to a legal firm was a huge change-up in terms of scale and size of the company. Whereas at Honeywell, I managed over a billion dollars of funds, here I manage maybe a quarter of that. But in terms of the overall scope and challenge, it is significant. So while some analytics Burek has been used to working with are either different or not there at all, she said she believes that, taking the current economic environment, the different conditions in the market place and the size of the firm into consideration, factors line up well for new procurement strategies and processes to be implemented in 2009 at Mayer Brown. In November 2008, shortly after Burek joined Mayer Brown, the firm laid off 33 people from its U.S. offices, citing the economic slowdown. The jobs cut included lawyers as well as support personnel. The managing partners and planning committee really supported the concept of bringing procurement in and formalizing it so that it could make a contribution to the firm in the difficult economic times that we are in, Burek said. Whether there are new positions being added or otherwise, we still have a focus on strategic hiring, even though we had to take the action to downsize.A diversified portfolio provided job securityMayer Brown serves many of the worlds largest companies and financial-services organizations, including a large proportion of the Fortune 100, FTSE 100, DAX and Hang Seng Index companies and most of the major investment banks. Despite turmoil in the sector, Burek said, the firm is well positioned to weather the economic recession because it has diversified its practices as some of the sectors decrease, others should improve. Obviously, she said, there are challenges in that nobody is seeing a significant upswing right now. But areas like litigation will go up as financial indicators go down. The positive in that sector is that there is still a need for legal support in some of those areas.Another challenge for Burek was adapting to a significantly different corporate culture. Mayer Brown is a 127-year-old law firm that Burek said has an outstanding reputation with both its clients and the legal community. Burek was also attracted to Mayer Browns commitment to pro bono law, representing disadvantaged clients and often unpopular causes. It is absolutely engrained. And a significant amount of hours are expected of each attorney. She also noted that there are additional opportunities for staff to become involved. In Chicago, for instance, we have the Stock ton School Reading Program, and any Mayer Brown associate, lawyer or staff is encouraged to help with the third-grade reading at Stockton. So there is a great commitment across the community as well as true bono work.Another factor Burek cited in her decision The firm is a strong proponent of women in the workplace, she said, and is both very family- and women-friendly. Burek said she appreciates that it is often mora challenging for women to make it to the top of large law firms. From my own experience as a woman coming through the ranks of corporate culture, I think you can see women making the conscious choice to stay home at a certain point and take a pause in their career, and that definitely has an impact when you transfer that into the legal environment. Some of those years that you may choose to focus on other things are critical to the partner path. The fact that one of the partners who interviewed Burek for her new position was a woman was crucial. That really made a diffe rence for me, Burek said.Burek stressed the importance of procurement for Mayer Brown as a global function. In her previous role at Honeywell, Burek had completed significant work with its international team in rolling out procurement with a global strategy, particularly in Europe. I think that was one of the decision factors as to why Mayer Brown picked me, said Burek, who has two undergraduate degrees. One is in business from Michigan State, a top four supply-chain procurement school in the U.S. The other is in Spanish. Spanish is definitely a huge asset. The first company that I worked for was a French company, so I also speak some conversational French. Burek decided early on that she wanted to leverage her language skills and work in the field of procurement so she chose to refine her education by also graduating with a supply-chain management MBA from Arizona State University.Opportunities for finance professionals in procurementBurek said she believes finance professionals wi th the right combination of skills and education have an excellent opportunity to move to procurement. She had been involved in recruiting MBA graduates from Arizona State into IBMs Supply-Chain Leadership Program and pointed out that the recruiting team often gave preference to students with financial backgrounds because of their strong analytical skills and understanding of PL and how to manage the budgeting. As the economy slows, firms are going to be looking for ways to avoid waste, to consolidate manpower, and to track and analyze global spending effectively though supply-chain management. Burek noted that most of the procurement job opportunities that she considered in her search were new positions in their organizations. I think you are starting to see the mid-level privately held firms looking at procurement because they either have managed it without much discipline to it, or they are starting to recognize that they need to focus on it, as it really can contribute to the bot tom line.

The Peter Principle and How to Beat It

The Peter Principle and How to Beat ItThe Peter Principle and How to Beat ItIn the 1969 bookThe Peter Principle, authors Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull wrote that workers in a hierarchical structure get promoted to the level at which they are incompetent and stay at that level for the rest of their careers. Logically, this means that virtually all managers are is incompetent. If they werent incompetent, they wouldnt be where they are. There is ample evidence to support the Peter principle, but that doesnt mean it has to happen to you. Peter Principle Logic This now-famous theory suggests that people who do good jobs are rewarded with promotions to the next level up. Each of those who perform well at that higher level is rewarded with anotlageher promotion. This process continues until each partie gets a job that he or she just isnt competent to do. None of them now deserve a promotion, so all of them stay in jobs at which they are incompetent. All of them are one level abo ve jobs they can do well. While this phenomenon is clearly observable in many cases, it is not always accurate. An individual may not be promoted because there is no opening. Example two senior research scientists are peers and about equal in age, experience, and talent. One is promoted to department manager. The other has to wait a couple of years until a similar position opens. An individual may choose to step down a level. Many excellent salespeople get promoted to management only to discover that they dont like management. They step back into the sales jobs at which they were competent and successful. An individual may lack the skills for the new job but works hard to develop those skills. Such people may have been classic Peter principle examples, but they are no longer. How to Beat The Peter Principle Its easy to see how the Peter principle took hold in the world of American business. The corporate world thrives on the competition among individuals for personal achievement, recognition, and promotion. But the pressure to move upwards has its perils. As the classic book notes, victims of the Peter principle generally stay at their level of incompetence until they retire. They dont usually get fired. But theyre usually miserable. So is everyone around them. Obviously, this is not good for business. Smart executives look for ways to beat the Peter principle. There are three ways to do it Promote better, train better, and, as a last resort, demote. Demotion may sound harsh, but it is often the only way to deal with the problem. And it can be a win-win situationbecause people who have risen to incompetence are not usually happy to be there. Inverse Promotion Then again, demotion can be humiliating. That is where the notion of inverse promotion kicks in. This practice developed directly as a result of the Peter principle. It assumes that the person to be demoted is a valued employee who has simply wound up in the wrong job. The person is transferred to a new job, often in a different department, that may be a lower level position but doesnt have an obviously lower job title. This does more than save face. A pay cut can usually be avoided since salary levels often have wide overlaps. Ideally, the person also has been given the right job this time. The Training Option Additional training and mentoring may give a Peter principle victim the tools needed to succeed. The word victim is deliberate. Why wasnt this training available before the promotion? Marcia Reynolds, author of Wander Woman How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction claims that you cant ...really measure the truth of the Peter principle without analyzing the training the person has had for the position they have moved into, especially if its a promotion. Every promotion entails new tasks, responsibilities, and perspectives. Many Peter principle examples might be competent if given a fair chance. The Bottom Line Before you give up employees who appe ar to be walking examples of the Peter Principle, make sure youve done everything you can to help them succeed at their new level. Training, mentoring, andgood leadershipmay be all they need to become competent.
